Simple World
City lights they fill the sky
Lighting bugs from eye to eye
How do those young birds learn to fly
Makes me wonder why we ask why
I needed to remind myself
What a simple world it can be
I needed to remind myself
What a simple world it can be
Crystal oceans you can see straight through
Yogo Sapphires turn royal blue
(You can) Spend your life searching for something new
Then you find out it’s right in front of you
I needed to remind myself
What a simple world it can be
I needed to remind myself
What a simple world it can be
Luke:
The first time we played Simple World was up in Vermont at Slade Hall, a room historic for the fact the Phish played some of their first gigs there. We played (and then slept) in the basement of the this place which was basically a dorm full of the coolest people on the planet. It was right after we bought our tour van and it was on our first out of state run – and my first visit to Burlington. The place was erupting with energy and the lyrics in this song really just hit home for me while we were on stage. Life was simple and wonderful, and everyone in that place knew it.
One day, a couple days after a show in the summer of ‘09 our good friend (and now manager) Steve called me on the phone. He said “Who wrote Simple World?” I told him that Brad wrote most of the music and that Eric and I wrote the lyrics…but he was asking “what band”, not who in Mondo Gecko. There was some silence and then he said “I love you guys” and hung up the phone. Turns out he thought it was a cover and was pumped to hear we wrote it! – Luke. Sept ‘09
